This study applied ERB analysis for measuring acoustic correlates of hypernasal fricatives produced by speakers with different aetiologies (cleft palate, maxillectomy and dysarthria). The speech materials were consonants /n/ and /s/ segmented from two Cantonese single words and four Cantonese oral sentences. Results showed that hypernasal speakers produced /s/ with significantly higher mean amplitudes at frequencies below 2500 Hz, and significantly lower mean amplitudes at frequencies above 3500 Hz. The findings were consistent with those obtained from a previous study with one-third-octave analysis using consonants (Chen, 2005). Slightly better correlations were found for ERB analysis in quantifying hypernasality than one-third-octave analysis.
